A half
a century ago, the famous author, Napolean Hill, studied some of the
most financially successful people in America (entrepreneurs, CEO’s,
industrialists, some of the great capitalists, etc.) and then wrote
his classic book, Think and Grow Rich. In it he
identified numerous characteristics that the most financially
successful people share in common.
One of
the characteristics that he described was the fact that the most
successful people surround themselves with successful people. We all
know that:
You
tend to become like the people with whom you surround yourself.
But
more importantly, the most successful leaders of our time recognize
that to lead effectively it takes a different mind-set and a
different thought process. Because of this, they actively seek for
ideas from other successful leaders, not from the masses who are not
leaders.
Napolean
Hill described what he called a “master-mind” group that all of
the successful people had built for themselves. This master-mind
group was a group of successful leaders that would gather
periodically to learn from each other.
Over
the years, this concept has proven to be very successful as thousands
have employed it and grown from their involvement in such a group.
As a manager and leader, you also need to make sure you are involved
in groups like this.
Over
the years, we have been involved in many such groups and we have
found that there are a few keys that make them work very well:
-
Always
have a set time and place to meet. If it’s left as something that
you’ll “get around to”, it won’t happen. It’s too easy to
get involved with all of your daily activities and not ever get your
next meeting set up. While it’s great to meet in person, and you
should from time to time, technology these days affords a great way
to get together at minimal expense. But it’s still important to
have a set day and time.
-
Always
have a moderator. Whether it’s a person designated in the group
or a professional you hire, it makes a big difference to have
someone in charge of moving things along and pulling ideas from the
group.
-
Always
have a topic planned ahead of time. If people show up with no
specific topic, it usually devolves into a waste of time. On the
other hand, if everyone knows well in advance what the topic will
be, they can come prepared with thoughts, ideas, and suggestions.
-
Start
with some education. We have found over the years that the creative
juices are stimulated best when the first 20 to 30 minutes of the
session are focused on education related to the topic. This allows
people to get into the mindset necessary and “primes the pump”
with ideas.
-
Limit
the numbers. One of the challenges with trying to share ideas in
most convention settings is the number of people in attendance.
It’s tough to get a good mastermind feeling when hundreds are
involved. We’ve found that the ideal numbers are between 20 and
40 people. Fewer, limits the amount of input and allows people to
“hide”. More, makes it difficult to get to know everyone and
learn from everyone.
-
Follow-up
with some form of repetition. Every good session we’ve been to,
we come away with great ideas, but if we don’t have a chance to
review those ideas, we lose most of them. For this reason, we’ve
always sought to record the sessions and then play them back a
couple of times.
In
2009, we, Peter Droubay and Bob McComb, will be moderating one or
more commercial real estate management master-mind groups. For years
we have been featured speakers at all of the major conventions for
the industry and we will continue to do that. But this year we’ll
also do what people have been asking us to do for years. We will be
pulling some of the best commercial real estate managers and owners
together to share ideas and strategies for success in the industry.
We will be conducting these sessions over the internet through an
interactive “webinar” experience. We invite you to be a part of
it.
Each
month, you will attend a session conducted live over the internet.
Each session will have a specific topic. Each session will include
pre-training materials to provoke thought. In each session, we will
start with some instruction on the topic for 20 to 30 minutes. We
will then spend the next hour moderating a discussion and Q & A
session on the topic. After the session, each participant will
receive a written synopsis of the session and the ideas covered, a
reading list for follow-up work, and the ability to review the
recordings of each session as much as you would like. Throughout the
year, there will be constant ability for participants to voice
opinions and desires and “steer” the curriculum to suit needs.
Topics
will include:
• Management
Beliefs and Principles
• 7
Levels of Leadership - Defining a Direction
• Proven
Techniques for Recruiting the Best
• Sizzling
Sales Meetings
• What
the House Provides – Maximizing the Tools and Systems Provided to
Agents

We are
excited to moderate these sessions because we are very excited about
the ideas we will receive. There will be no better place to get the
practical ideas you need to improve your firm in 2009.
To be a
part of this, you simply need to register for the series. Initially,
we will be conducting the sessions on the third Wednesday of each
month.
The
“tuition” to be a part of it will be $795.00 for the year (about
$65.00 per session). This will cover the costs of the technology,
the pre-session and post-session materials, the recordings and
transcripts of each session, and the moderating and instruction from
us. We will also give you a 20% off coupon good towards any of our
products and services throughout the year (if you are already using
our training programs in your firm, this alone could cover the cost
of the sessions).
Our
promise to you is that you will receive many times the cost in the
form of ideas that will increase your income. If you are ever
dissatisfied with the master-mind group, we’ll be happy to refund
what you’ve paid, but we know that the opposite will be true. We
know you will love it and profit from it.
